DO YOU KNOW OF SUNSHINE JOURNALISM ??

Saeed Kamalu bako

Many Nigerian government that came and gone constantly accused the media of being unpatriotic. Saying they focus more on the negative reports about the country, thus feeding the international media with negative connotation on the country and the possible angle to depict Nigeria negatively.

Sunshine journalism is when media portrayals of a society is always in good aspect (positively), optimistic, etc. This make the media to go with the hide of those with discretionary spending power. This also make the role of the media of being the defender and upholder of public interest be relegated to the background and  capitalist takes over which will make the media supportive to only it's market and shareholders.

Mondli Makhanya, SANEF chairman, said African media need to tell African stories with a great quality but in free environment " A free media is good for your brand and it's future and development" he said.

Most of the people are of the opinion that sunshine journalism, which is made up of telling positive stories about a society will make the country go forward. But can that be applicable in Nigeria? I disagree.

Nigeria need the kind of journalism that will tell the good ,the bad and the ugly. Do you think it is good for us to hide story about mismanagement, corruption, prostitution, HIV/AIDS and make them unnoticed? Certainly no, the citizen needs to know about them and how to adjust in other to have a better society.
