BRIEF HISTORY OF WASE

 By Saeed Kamalu Bako

The history of  Wase dated to 1817 starting from the coming of Madaki Hassan the son of Giwa. Though the history cannot be fully completed without mentioning the father of Madaki Hassan (Giwa)

Giwa was a Fulani man who came from Borno, he first settled at Gazargamu and later moved to a placed called Elelle in Borno Emirate. He however later migrated to Wuro-Mayo in Bauchi Emirate where he continued propagating Islam. In Wuro-Mayo, Hardo Bala gave his daughter (Pendo) hand in marriage to Giwa. Giwa also married the daughter of Zaranda (Zainab). He (Giwa) was the first person to know about Wase, because during that time he used to bring his cattle to graze around Wase Rock. Giwa gave birth to three (3) sons (Hassan, Abdu and Umaru).

The ancient Wase however, was formally founded by Madaki Hassan of Bauchi in 1817. Madaki Hassan the son of Giwa studied under Usman Dan fodio. When Danfodio send  Yakubu; one of his pupil and founder of Bauchi Emirate to canvass for followers in his area, nobody accepted the teaching of Yakubu except Hassan and it was him (Hassan) that followed him back to Degel. This was confirmed in a letter written by Madaki Hassan to Ardo Bala (his brother) in person of Madu the son of Zakari Ya’au, in the Northern archive Kaduna and a photocopy in the Emir of Wase's Archive.

Consequently, when Yakubu was given a flag to launch the jihad in Bauchi, he made Hassan his war commander and conferred him the title of Madaki because they returned to Bauchi together. Among the people that were together with Yakubu and Madaki to collect the flag include Faruku from the Fulani of Jahun who became the first person to get the title of Galadima in Bauchi; M. Muhammadu Kusu who became the first Wambai and Barde Abdullahi, who became the first Barde of Bauchi.

The time the jihad was ongoing, Yakubu and Madaki Hassan move south ward and arrived at Wase-Tofa, thus making the people of the area to surrender. On a move around Wase rock together with Yakubu, Madaki Hassan expressed the desire to settle there. Yakubu was excited and immediately wrote to seek for the permission from the Sultan to build the city of Wase. The permission was later granted with the advice it should be sited north of the rock.

The city of Wase was build in 1817 but that doesn’t stopped Madaki Hassan from moving further with his exploits, where he extended his influence by conquering almost the whole of low land division. Even after Madaki has founded Wase, he continued to serve as the Madakin Bauchi and that made him the most trusted advisor to the Emir of Bauchi (Yakubu). Madaki Hassan was the only advisor that refused to recognize the overlord of Shehu Laminu (Kalumbo) of Borno when he threatened to destroy Bauchi.

Also, when Yakubu was sent by Sultan Bello to assist the Emir of Kano in repelling an attack by Kalumbo in 1828, he went on that mission with Madaki. Yakubun Bauchi fought this war alone because the people of Kano refused to fight Kalumbo. This war however, was won by Yakubu but there was heavy casualty, among who was Madaki Hassan; his commander and the founder of Wase.

Madaki Hassan’s grave is 1 mile from Kiyawa in the present day Jigawa state and he was survived by many Children.

However the present day Wase is located 216 km from Jos in plateau state as the largest Local Government (in land mass) covering 1/6 of the entire state and also the 5th largest local government in Nigeria. Wase is occupied by Fulani (the ones ruling the emirate), Jukun and Basharawa as the three major tribes. Others include: Bagom, Tarok, Jarawa,  etc. Wase however is having more than 20 ethnic groups.

Wase is also known for its economic activities because of its abundant mineral resources like zinc ore, lead, phosphate e.t.c making it the local government generating almost 1/5 of the revenue of the entire state. The ancient town is having a market which holds every Friday. Although during the period of harvest in Wase, everyday is a market day because majority of the people of Wase are Famers which make them earned the name food basket on the Plateau. They cultivate rice, yam, maize, millet e.t.c in larger quantity.

The cultural activities in Wase is very rich, ranging from Fulani yearly festival which normally happens at the end of every year, Durba festival during Sallah and also other festivals by traditional worshipers like the Kumbur, and Wase-Kofa annual festival.
