Ramadan: Month of Ibadat and Repentance

Faizu Idris Ibrahim

Ramadan being the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, Allah commanded Muslim world over to fast from its commencement to an end. This annual rite is regarded as one of the pillars of Islam.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “O you who believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."

The prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) said:  “Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakat, making pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.”

Thus, fasting in the month of Ramadan is an obligatory act of worship upon all Muslims men and women as required by the above Qur'anic verse and Hadith.

When is Ramadan commence?
Ramadan commences with the sight of new crescent by one or more trustworthy Muslims or after compilation of thirty days of the month of Sha'aban as  Aisha, the mother of believers Narrated that "The prophet peace be upon Him use to count days in Sha'ban in a manner he did not count any other month; then he fasted when he sighted the new moon of Ramadan; but if the weather was cloudy he counted thirty days and then fasted. Also Scheik Abdallah bn Jibreen May Allah protect him said " the month of Ramadan commences with the sight of crescent by a trustworthy Muslim even if it is a woman.

Who fast?
Islamic scholars unanimously agreed that fasting is compulsory upon healthy Muslims men and women.

Who is exempt from fasting?
People who are sick or who have illness, elderly people, travelers and women who are menstruating, post natal, pregnant or breast feeding and children do not have to fast.

People exempted from fasting during Ramadan (excluding children) can make up the missed fast later. But, if a person is not able to fast at all particularly if that is for health reasons or old-age and breastfeeder can compensate by feeding a needy person for each day he or she did not fast.

What should be abstained?
While fasting, Muslims should refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations and also should desist from sinful acts that may negate the reward of their fasting like false speech, insulting, cursing, lying, fighting and all other bad deeds and stay humble.

What should be Observed?
A fasting person is encouraged to observe some Sunnatic acts like taking pre-fast meal before dawn, early Iftar at sunset, braking the fast with an odd number of fresh dates or dried ones, if non are available, a few sip of water is enough. Also praying Salat-ul-taraweeh, reciting Holy Qur’an, giving Sadaqah and pray to Allah to end the spread of COVID 19, heal the infected ones, bless his Nigerians and  better his Nigeria.
